John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor of Chemistry

Chuan He is the John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago. A pioneering chemical biologist, he discovered reversible RNA methylation—particularly N⁶‑methyladenosine (m⁶A)—as a central mechanism of both post‑transcriptional and transcriptional gene regulation, and developed influential genomic tools to study DNA and RNA modification as well as transcription and RNA-RNA interactions. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Science and Technology of China and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT, followed by a Damon Runyon postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard. He joined UChicago in 2002, rising to Professor and his current endowed chair. His honors include the 2023 Wolf Prize in Chemistry, HHMI Investigator, Paul Marks Prize, Tetrahedron Prize for Creativity. His h‑index is 181 with over 151,000 citations.
