Vladimir N. Ipatieff Professor of Catalytic Chemistry
Tobin J. Marks (Northwestern University, Evanston, IL) is the Vladimir N. Ipatieff Professor of Catalytic Chemistry, Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, and Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University. He specializes in organometallic chemistry, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, and the design of functional electronic and photonic materials.
He received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Maryland (1966) and his Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1970). He joined the Northwestern faculty in 1970 and has remained there throughout his distinguished career.
Dr. Marks is a world leader in catalytic polymerization, organo-f-element chemistry, and the development of high-performance materials for organic electronics and sustainable catalysis. His research has enabled the production of billions of kilograms of polyolefins worldwide and led to multiple commercial technologies. He has authored over 1,200 peer-reviewed publications.
His numerous honors include the U.S. National Medal of Science (2005), the American Chemical Society Priestley Medal (2017, ACS’s highest honor), the Dreyfus Prize in the Chemical Sciences, the NAS Award in Chemical Sciences, election to the National Academy of Sciences, and many other ACS and international awards. He is a prolific contributor to high-impact journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
