Fundamental and applied polymer research on the International Space Station National Laboratory
The International Space Station National Laboratory (ISSNL) offers the opportunity to study polymer chemistry in the unique spaceflight environment characterized by microgravity, radiation exposure, and the vacuum of space for external payloads. Fundamental research on the ISSNL provides insights into biological and physical phenomena which cannot be gained on Earth while translational research holds promise for future in-space manufacturing applications. Examples of ongoing research will be discussed including exposure experiments on exterior hardware, 3D printing of biopolymers, and thin-film deposition.
