Erick M. Carreira, born in 1963 in Havana, Cuba, is a Cuban-American organic chemist and professor at ETH Zurich since 1998, where he also serves as deputy head of the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences. He received his BS from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (1984), PhD from Harvard University (1990), and completed postdoctoral research at Caltech. Since January 2021, he has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), becoming the first non-US-based and Hispanic American to hold the position. His research focuses on asymmetric synthesis, catalysis, stereoselective reactions, and photoresponsive molecules for biological applications. Among his honors are the Beckman Young Investigator Award, ACS Pure Chemistry Award, Thieme-IUPAC Prize, Ryoji Noyori Prize, and election to the National Academy of Sciences. With an h-index of 119 and over 45,700 citations, he remains a leading figure in synthetic chemistry.
