Karl Mueller
Ames National Laboratory
Director
Karl Mueller is the Director of Ames National Laboratory and a leading authority in solid‑state NMR spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, and advanced energy storage. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. Before joining Ames National Laboratory, Mueller held senior scientific and leadership roles at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, including Chief Scientist and Technology Officer for the Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate. A longtime contributor to the American Chemical Society, he has served as an ACS journal reviewer and published extensively in ACS journals across materials chemistry and spectroscopy. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Mueller has advanced NMR methods for probing structure and dynamics in complex materials, shaping next‑generation approaches to understanding and designing quantum and energy‑relevant systems.
