Norbert Holtkamp

Fermi Lab

Director

Norbert Holtkamp is the Director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and an internationally recognized leader in accelerator science, large‑scale research infrastructure, and high‑energy physics program management. He earned his Diplom‑Ingenieur (equivalent to an M.S.) in Physics from the Technical University of Dortmund and completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Dortmund, where he specialized in accelerator systems. Before joining Fermilab, Holtkamp served as Deputy Director and Chief Accelerator Officer at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, overseeing major facility upgrades and strategic initiatives. He previously directed the ITER Construction Project in France and led accelerator systems at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His career spans the design, construction, and operation of some of the world’s most complex scientific instruments, shaping the future of U.S. accelerator‑based discovery.

Holtkamp’s career is rooted in: Accelerator physics, Large‑scale scientific facility construction, High‑energy physics program leadership, Fusion and neutron science infrastructure

These domains typically intersect with: DOE Office of Science, High‑energy physics collaborations, Fusion and neutron facilities, International accelerator consortia

His work does intersect with ACS‑relevant areas in broader ways:
Materials science for accelerator components
Radiation‑resistant materials
Cryogenic and superconducting systems
Large‑scale scientific instrumentation used by chemists
