At World Petrochemical Conference 2024, CPChem President and CEO Bruce Chinn to receive Chemical Marketing & Economics STEM Leadership Award for Propelling Diverse Talent
Distinguished nonprofit recognizes CPChem’s leadership in advancing STEM in the chemical industry
Houston, TX and Morristown, NJ – February 15, 2024 – Chemical Marketing & Economics, Inc. (CME) and S&P Global Commodity Insights today announced that Bruce Chinn, retiring president and chief executive officer at Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem), will be the recipient of the CME STEM Leadership Award™ for Propelling Diverse Talent. Chinn will be honored at the S&P Global Commodity Insights’ World Petrochemical Conference (WPC) in Houston, Texas, on March 19, 2024.
CPChem was established in July 2000 as a joint venture between Chevron U.S.A. Inc. and Phillips 66 Company, combining the chemicals operations of both companies. CPChem’s business relies on STEM innovation driven by employees with diverse backgrounds, experience levels, talents, perspectives and decision-making styles.
Since 2017, CPChem has sponsored CME’s award-winning NASA Symposium and other impactful STEM innovation programs for over 50,000 diverse students. In 2020, CPChem was among the first companies to support the Future of STEM Scholars Initiative (FOSSI) to help students pursue STEM degrees at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and has pledged more than $1.4 million to FOSSI to date. More than $40 million in FOSSI scholarships have been raised across the industry to support over 600 students.
“Bruce Chinn’s leadership in promoting diverse STEM talent and enabling them to pursue their professional dreams has contributed to CPChem’s strong company culture and drive toward excellence in all facets of the business,” CME Co-Chair Ksenia Takhistova stated.
“Bruce has helped reshape the STEM student support at professional associations and collaborated with employees and communities to invest in economic development and education opportunities that support the company’s sustainability strategy,” CME Co-Chair Steve Barnett noted.
“I congratulate Bruce for leading CPChem’s drive to expand the diversity of the STEM talent pool and accelerate the materials and energy transition,” S&P Global Commodity Insights Senior Vice President Mark Eramo stated.
“It is my privilege to receive CME’s recognition of CPChem’s support of STEM programs. We believe that industry plays a central role in supporting programs like those of CME, NASA and FOSSI that enable diverse STEM talent to be ready for the jobs of today and tomorrow. Our investment in STEM education boosts sustainable manufacturing, business performance, environmental stewardship and economic growth. We deeply appreciate S&P Global Commodity Insights collaboration with CME at WPC to inspire diverse STEM leadership for sustainable innovation,” Chinn said.
Bruce Chinn will retire from his position as president and chief executive officer of CPChem at the end of February. CPChem is a global petrochemical joint venture with a top-quartile safety record and 2022 revenue of more than $14 billion. Chinn has more than 40 years of industry experience. Before leading CPChem, he served as the president for Chevron Chemicals, overseeing its Oronite business. He was also part of the board of directors at CPChem alongside fellow executive representatives for company owners Chevron U.S.A. Inc. and Phillips 66 Company.
Chinn began his career at DuPont, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in manufacturing, technical, commercial and business leadership at the U.S. and international level. He first joined Chevron in 2006, where he held several executive roles in refining for the company’s operations in Venezuela, Richmond, Calif., and Pascagoula, Miss. He is a member of the board of directors for WM, North America’s leading provider of comprehensive environmental solutions. Chinn has also served in top executive functions across several prominent organizations, including as board director and executive committee member of the American Chemistry Council and member of the Executive Leadership Council. Chinn holds a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University.
