Brudermüller was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1961. After earning a Chemistry doctorate from the University of Karlsruhe in 1987, he did a postdoc at the University of California, Berkeley. He joined BASF in 1988 as a research scientist. After roles of increasing responsibility, he became president of the Functional Polymers division in 2003 and a member of the Board of Executive Directors in 2006. In 2018, Brudermüller became Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors and Chief Technology Officer. He is a member of various institutions, including the Federation of German Industries (BDI).
